How it works

PicoWay is a third-generation picosecond laser platform manufactured by Candela Medical, a US aesthetic technology company with over four decades of clinical laser experience. The device delivers laser energy in picoseconds, which is one trillionth of a second, making it one of the shortest pulse durations available in aesthetic medicine. This ultra-short pulse generates a photoacoustic effect that shatters pigment particles into fine dust without transferring significant heat to surrounding skin.

PicoWay offers three wavelengths in a single platform: 532nm for red pigments and superficial concerns, 785nm for blue and green tattoo inks, and 1064nm for deeper pigment and skin rejuvenation. This multi-wavelength capability is why PicoWay is considered one of the most colour-versatile picosecond lasers in the world, particularly for tattoo removal where older single-wavelength systems struggled with greens, blues, and oranges.

Because the picosecond pulse minimises heat transfer to surrounding tissue, PicoWay carries a significantly lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation than older nanosecond laser systems. This makes it a strong option for medium and darker skin tones across the full Fitzpatrick range, including patients who have been turned away from other pigment or resurfacing treatments. The technology is FDA-cleared and Health Canada-approved for use across multiple indications including benign pigmented lesions, multi-coloured tattoos, acne scars, and facial wrinkles.

A standard PicoWay session takes 10 to 30 minutes depending on the area and concern. Most patients return to normal activities the same day with only mild redness or slight swelling that resolves within hours. Pigmentation results often appear within one to two weeks as the body clears fragmented pigment through the lymphatic system, with continued improvement over the following sessions. Every PicoWay session at BioPlus is performed by our medical team, supported by nearly 30 years of clinical laser experience in Vancouver.

Frequently asked questions

What does PicoWay treat?

PicoWay is used at BioPlus to treat pigmentation including age spots and sun damage, melasma, freckles, acne scars, wrinkles, and unwanted tattoos in all ink colours. The picosecond pulse duration combined with multiple wavelengths makes PicoWay one of the most versatile pigment and resurfacing platforms available.

How does PicoWay differ from other laser tattoo removal?

PicoWay delivers energy in picoseconds, which is one trillionth of a second. This ultra-short pulse shatters pigment particles into a fine dust through a photoacoustic effect rather than heat, which reduces collateral damage to surrounding skin. PicoWay also offers three wavelengths in one platform, which means it can target a wider range of ink colours, including the stubborn greens and blues that older nanosecond lasers struggle with.

Is PicoWay safe for all skin tones?

Yes. Because PicoWay uses picosecond pulses with minimal heat transfer to surrounding tissue, it carries a significantly lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation than older laser technologies. PicoWay is FDA-cleared for treatment across all Fitzpatrick skin types, including medium and darker skin tones that have historically faced higher risk with other resurfacing or pigment-targeting lasers.

What does a PicoWay session feel like?

Most patients describe the sensation as a series of quick, hot snaps against the skin, often compared to a rubber band flick. Most pigment and rejuvenation treatments do not require numbing. For tattoo removal or more sensitive areas, a topical numbing cream may be applied beforehand to keep you comfortable.

How long is a PicoWay session?

Session length depends on the treatment area and concern. Small spot treatments such as a single tattoo or a focused pigmentation patch may take 10 to 20 minutes. Full-face rejuvenation or melasma treatments typically take 20 to 30 minutes. Larger tattoos or multiple areas may take longer.

What is the downtime after PicoWay?

Downtime is typically minimal. Most patients experience mild redness or slight swelling that resolves within a few hours to a day. Tattoo removal may produce frosting or pinpoint bleeding that scabs and heals within one to two weeks. Your practitioner will give you a clear post-treatment care plan based on your specific treatment.

How many sessions will I need?

For pigmentation and skin rejuvenation, most patients need 3 to 5 sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Melasma may require ongoing maintenance. Tattoo removal typically requires 5 to 10 sessions depending on tattoo size, ink colour, depth, and age. Your medical team will build a personalised plan during your consultation.

When will I see results?

For pigmentation treatments, you may see visible lightening within one to two weeks as the body clears the fragmented pigment through the lymphatic system. Tattoo removal results progress gradually with each session as the body continues to flush ink particles. Skin rejuvenation results typically continue developing over three to six months as collagen remodelling completes.

Can PicoWay remove all tattoo colours?

PicoWay offers three wavelengths (532nm, 785nm, and 1064nm), making it one of the most colour-versatile picosecond lasers available. It effectively treats black, blue, green, red, orange, yellow, and most coloured inks. Very light pastels and white inks remain difficult for any laser technology to remove, and your practitioner will assess your tattoo during consultation to set realistic expectations.
